Health, safety and welfare

What happens if a student is ill or injured, how parents are contacted, and how younger students are looked after.

Every school says it takes safety seriously. That sentence is worth nothing, because no school says the opposite. What is worth something is a straight answer to a specific question, so this page tries to give straight answers, and says so plainly where we cannot yet.

If you are sending a teenager abroad for the first time, the things you actually want to know are small and practical. Who does my child tell if something is wrong. Who decides whether it is serious. How quickly do I hear about it. Those are the questions this page is for.

If a student is ill or injured

The campus keeps a stocked first aid kit, and staff live on site.

A student who feels unwell or is hurt should tell their manager.

Outside office hours, two trained first aiders are on call. They are based near the campus rather than on it, and are reached by phone.

You are never on your own here: one or two members of staff live inside the academy, so someone is on duty on campus at all times, weekends included.

The hospital is not close. Students are taken to Baguio General Hospital (BGH) or Notre Dame de Chartres Hospital, about 20 to 30 minutes by road, depending on traffic, and the school has a van and other vehicles.

If a student needs to be seen by a doctor, a staff member goes with them, and a student never goes alone.

The campus is in Barangay Irisan, which is a little outside the center of Baguio rather than in it. What that means for getting around day to day: Studying in Baguio

Telling parents

For a student under eighteen, a parent or guardian is contacted when something is serious.

Day to day the contact runs through your child rather than around them: every student has the phone number of their own manager and can reach them at any hour.

You can ask for an update at any time, through the manager, on whichever messaging app you use, including LINE, KakaoTalk, WhatsApp and Viber.

Students under eighteen

Younger students are not simply adult students who happen to be younger, and the honest version of this page says what is different rather than implying nothing is.

Outside class hours, younger students are the responsibility of staff who are on the campus at all times, with CCTV coverage throughout.

Leaving the campus: a student under eighteen cannot leave the campus without a staff member.

The curfew for students under eighteen is 21:30 from Sunday to Thursday, when managers check rooms.

Food, allergies and insurance

Tell your manager about a food allergy or a medical diet at orientation. Meals are served buffet style, and the kitchen keeps suitable options ready.

What is served, including the halal station: Food and Meals

On travel and medical insurance we will tell you what the school requires rather than recommend a policy, because which cover suits a family is not ours to advise on. Ask us and we will tell you where we stand.

The campus itself

The campus is gated, with security personnel on duty and staff who live on site.

Why this page says "ask us" so often

Because the alternative is worse. A page that answers everything in comfortable general terms reads well and helps nobody, and the moment it is wrong it is wrong about something that matters. We would rather publish the answers we can stand behind and be plain about the rest.

If you ask a question here that this page does not answer, you will get a specific reply from a person, and we will add it here afterward.

Ask us something specific

Tell us your child's age and when they would be coming, and ask whatever you actually want to know. A vague answer is no use to you and no use to us.
